Henricksen Wins Case To Fund Canadian County Juvenile Justice Center

The Oklahoman reports:

A state supreme court opinion should settle the uncertainty over legal use of a Canadian County sales tax that funds the county juvenile center.

Issued Tuesday, the opinion affirms a county judge’s temporary order to continue funding the Gary E. Miller Canadian County Children’s Justice Center in El Reno with a 0.035 percent sales tax approved by voters in 1996.

Use of the funds came into question after an Oct. 31 attorney general’s opinion that said voters only authorized the construction of the building but not ongoing programs and services, except maintenance and janitors. …

“We will seek a final ruling that the attorney general’s opinion in this matter is in error and that the county must continue using the sales tax to fund operations until such time, if ever, that the voters change this tax,” said Mark Henricksen, an attorney representing the county sheriff and other stakeholders. …
